Theoretical Questions

  1. Your author introduced you to several metaethical theories, including ethical nihilism, ethical relativism, ethical skepticism, ethical cognitivism, and ethical universalism.

Although the descriptions of these theories were very brief, and although we have only scratched the surface of them in the short reading, I’m curious which theory or theories you find most attractive.

In other words, which theory or theories, from among those discussed in Chapter 2, do you come closest to accepting, and why?

  • In Chapter 3, your author discusses three basic approaches to ethical analysis: virtue ethics, deontology, and consequentialism. Which of these different approaches do you find yourself leaning more toward than the others, and why?
  • STATEMENT:  “We have no duties to non-human nature.  That is to say, nature has no moral rights.  We cannot wrong animals, trees, ecosystems, etc.  Instead, non-human nature should be regarded as a resource for humans to use in whatever ways promote long-term human well-being.”

Do you agree or disagree with this statement?  Why?
