Science Museum

For the trip to Science Museum we are divided into two group, the same as for your seminars. Seminar Group 1:
We are meeting straight at the Science Museum at 13:00 at the group entrance and will be going to the Information Age gallery on the second floor (https://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/see-and-do/information-age
). The meeting will be held one and a half hours from 13:00 to 14:30 after that you will be free to go home or explore the museum by yourself. We won’t be going back to the University for seminars.

Seminar Group 2:

We are meeting straight at the Science Museum at 14:30 at the group entrance and will be going to the Information Age gallery on the second floor (https://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/see-and-do/information-age
). The meeting will be held one and a half hours from 14:30 to 16:00 after that you will be free to go home or explore the museum by yourself. We won’t be going back to the University for seminars.

    The task for the field trip:

While at the museum keep in mind these questions:

  1. What are the examples of New and Old media?
  2. What is analog and what is digital?

● Analogue: measuring in waves, physical measurements, non-digital: sound waves, thermal waves
○ Ex: thermometer
○ Information going through soundwaves, should record AND measure
● Digital: recorded in binary bits, percieves in 0s and 1s (layer of a computer, first layer – similar to when talking)
○ PCs, PDAs (personal digital assistance – phone)

  1. What are the examples of the convergence culture?

You will need to come up with the examples of new media, old media and convergence culture from the computer room exhibition and present it to the rest of the group.

New Media:

● Virtual Reality (VR) Experience: An exhibit showcasing the latest VR technology, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in virtual environments, such as exploring the International Space Station or walking through a historical city.
● Interactive Touchscreen Displays: Large touchscreen displays where visitors can interact with digital information and simulations related to various scientific topics, like physics or biology.
● 3D Printing Demonstration: A 3D printer in action, showing how this cutting-edge technology can create physical objects from digital designs.
● Augmented Reality (AR) Scavenger Hunt: Visitors can use smartphones or AR glasses to play an interactive scavenger hunt that combines the physical space with digital overlays.

Old Media:

● Vintage Computers: A collection of early personal computers, like the Commodore 64, Apple II, or original IBM PC, illustrating the evolution of computing technology.
● Punch Card Programming: An exhibit explaining the history of punch cards and their role in early computing, complete with a demonstration of a card reader.
● Mechanical Calculators: Vintage mechanical calculating machines that were used before electronic calculators and computers became widespread.
● Retro Video Games: A section dedicated to classic video games like Pong, Pac-Man, and Space Invaders, allowing visitors to play these games on original arcade machines.

Convergence Culture:

● Multimedia History Timeline: An interactive display that connects the evolution of media, technology, and culture over time, showcasing how different media forms have converged and influenced one another.
● Coding Workshops: Workshops or stations where visitors can learn to code and understand the role of programming in modern media and technology.
● Digital Storytelling: An exhibit demonstrating the convergence of storytelling across various media, such as books, films, video games, and interactive experiences.
● Social Media Simulation: A hands-on experience that explores the impact of social media on our lives, including discussions on the convergence of online and offline interactions.
