Rhetoric Analysis from Readings

I will ask you to engage with your core readings for the week, and asking you to connect concepts from your core readings to your chosen additional reading one.

Core readings:

Angela Davis, “Racism, Birth Control, and Reproductive Rights”

Dorothy Roberts, “Reproductive Justice, Not Just Rights” in Dissent Magazine

Additional Reading:

“Reproductive Justice in the Prison System,” from If/When/How ; Lawyering for Reproductive Justice

Discussion Question

This week, I want you to combine and connect the ideas from the two core readings and your chosen additional reading. Specifically, you should answer the following questions:

  • Think about the core readings from Davis and Roberts. Briefly summarize why the rhetoric of one’s “right to choose” was expanded by Black feminists to be the “right to have a child, not have a child, and parent the children we have in safe, healthy, and supportive environments.”
  • What kind of discussion did you hear immediately after the overturn of Roe v. Wade, if any? What kinds of rhetoric were used then in the discussion you saw (choice-focused, reproductive justice language, something else)?
  • Explain how your chosen additional reading frames reproductive justice. How do the authors/artists/activists bring in issues that are seemingly unrelated to reproductive freedom, and how do they argue that the issues are linked to the RJ rights outlined above?
