Overview
In this activity, students will create a public service announcement (PSA) for an infectious disease, to be delivered to their community.
Learning Objectives
- Describe the chain of transmission for a communicable disease.
- Differentiate between acquired, natural and active immunity.
- Examine recent emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases from a global perspective.
- Discuss the role of the community health nurse relevant to communicable disease
The Activity
Community/public health nurses must be knowledgeable of the mandatory reporting requirements of certain infectious diseases and be able to communicate in layperson terms about how to prevent the spread of disease. Infectious diseases can spread in a matter of hours rather than days or months. Diseases such as measles, pertussis, and tuberculosis have now reappeared and the incidences of these diseases are increasing, not only in third world countries, but in the United States.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is a government agency whose mission is to protect the health and safety of the people in the United States. One way this is accomplished is by mandating that certain infectious diseases be reported. It is important for nurses to not only be aware of the reportable infectious diseases that could occur in their own community, but also to be aware of the impact of cultural beliefs on health, so culturally-appropriate health education materials can be developed and accepted by the community for which the information was developed.
Student Instructions
Select an infectious disease from the CDC National Notifiable Infectious Conditions List (Links to an external site.) that could potentially impact the community where you live. This could be based off your current county or zip code. You can look up the statistical data here http://www.flhealthcharts.com/charts/default.aspx (Links to an external site.)
- Research the details of the disease using the CDC website and other sources.
- In an APA formatted, 100-200 word document, explain the PSA to your faculty, clearly describe the disease, explain the chain of transmission and discuss strategies a nurse would use to decrease the spread of this disease. Include the CDC mandatory reporting requirements for the disease and address how this disease could become a global health issue. In other words, what might cause this disease to spread from the U.S. to other countries?
- Using a recording tool, develop a 1-3 minute (max) PowerPoint PSA that could be used to inform the community about the infectious disease. Make sure the PSA is in layperson terms and include how to find out more about the disease. (see video in Canvas Module on how to embed audio and create a PowerPoint PSA)
- This must be completed using your voice. If you use additional music/sounds that is not yours, you must cite the source (copyright issues).
Submission to Canvas:
- Before your final submission: please be sure to check that you can hear your voiceover on each PowerPoint Slide!! Rehearse your presentation before you finally submit it!
- Submit your presentation into the appropriate link in Canvas: There are two links you must submit two: the main assignment link (for me to grade) and to the discussion thread (for your other classmates to view your presentation.
- Submissions must be saved and submitted as .ppt or .pptx- other formats such as Google drive will not be graded and returned to student. Failure to submit presentation as such will result in deduction of points!!
