Perception of Body Image

OVERVIEW
This assignment will give you the opportunity to reflect on the influence images from various forms of media have on body image. For this assignment, you will have the option of which assignment to complete. You only need to complete 1 of the following assignments!
The first assignment is the Your Perception of Body Image Assignment. For this assignment, you will keep a record of 12 images of people you pay attention to in magazines, television ads, social media, and/or websites. You will note how similar or dissimilar the images are to you, your feelings about the images, and the messages you interpret about bodies in general or your own body.
The second assignment is the Body Positivity Assignment. For this assignment, you will keep a record of 12 images that depict body positivity that you see in magazines, television ads, social media, and/or websites. You will note how the images are displayed, methods used to question the ideal view of beauty, and the messages being communicated.
INSTRUCTIONS

1. Choose which assignment you want to complete.
2. You must record a total of 12 images. You can include the images in your submission, but it is not required.
3. You can keep a record by creating a table like the one in the Social Psychology of Dress textbook in chapter 7, page 173 or by keeping a journal.
4. For the Your Perception of Body Image Assignment, answer the following questions, for each image:
   • How similar/dissimilar is this image to me?
   • How does this image make me feel?
   • What message about bodies in general or my own body am I receiving from this image?
5. For the Body Positivity Assignment, answer the following questions, for each image:
   • Describe the outfit (cut, color, pattern, etc.) and how it is styled on the person (hair, make-up, accessories.
   • What are some of the methods the designer, advertiser, or influencer used to question the ideal view of beauty?
   • What message is the designer, advertiser, or influencer communicating about bodies?
6. Answers to the above questions should be detailed and in complete sentences.
7. After recording 12 images, write a minimum 200 word reflection paragraph about what you have learned from this assignment.
8. First person point of view is acceptable for this assignment.
9. Review the grading rubric before submitting the assignment.
