Observing Language Development

Hopefully, you reviewed the Observation Guidelines Document and practiced anecdotal and running record observation notes in Week One.

For your first observation, please watch this video of children playing with chalk.

Observation #1 Video

While watching the video, do so through a lens of observing language development.

First, choose one child and write anecdotal notes on what that child says and does.  (Please note that the practice for the anecdotal notes done in week one, was on much shorter videos. Since this video is longer, you should have more to note.)

Then, comment on the following:

  1. What do you notice about Avery, Elijah, Ethan and Jerra, and their language development (grammar, vocabulary, articulation, content)?
  2. How do they differ?
  3. Who seems to be the most advanced? Why?
  4.  Which child has a need for growth in his/her language development? Why?

Finally, make sure you edit your writing! (Read it out loud, peer-review, etc.) This is a higher education course; your writing should reflect it!
