During the foreseeable future, it is reasonable to assume that efforts to improve quality will increasingly shape the future of health care delivery. There are questions, however, as to whether the nursing profession is prepared for such a future. For example, in 5 years will nurses be prepared for an environment in which decisions based explicitly on information about quality determine who gets resources, how patients are cared for, and ultimately, which professions thrive? Will nurses have empirically based information linking quality to nursing practice? Will nurses be able to implement quality improvement in nursing practice? Are nursing educators providing sufficient education and background in quality improvement needed by nurses in the future? Because we believe that neither the nursing profession nor nursing education programs can answer these questions unequivocally, the time has come to consider requiring nursing curriculum to explicitly incorporate theories, methods, and practices in quality improvement.
