Leadership and Culture in Military Operations

Purpose: In this unit you reviewed the concept of culture and learn how to analyze and apply cultural considerations and leadership to the planning and execution of military operations across the spectrum of operations?  Culture is a major influence on how people “see” or perceive what surrounds them; we ascribe “meaning” to what we perceive through our cultural “filters.”

For this discussion board assignment, students have the option to write about one of the two topics. Students will choose one of the below topics and follow the instructions for that topic.

Topic Choice 1: This Discussion Board targets ELOs 400-SMC-1015.16 (L208: Developing Ethical Organizations); 400-SMC-1015.26 (L303: Leadership and Decision Making); 400-SMC-1015.28 (L304: Leadership and Moral Courage); 400-SMC-1015.11 & 400-SMC-1015.25 (L305: Leadership and Culture in Military Operations); 400-SMC-1015.22 & 400-SMC-1015.31 (L306: Organizational Leadership Philosophy).

When cultures clash, there are fundamental beliefs or concepts in play.  As military leaders you must understand that, whatever “meaning” humans perceive, it influences their “reality” and behavioral responses to that reality.

When conducting military operations in environments where the culture is different from your own, you should understand that you communicate across widely different cultural filters and misunderstandings about intent, motive, purpose, and “meaning” are virtually guaranteed. 

As a result of this lesson, you have gained a better understanding of a leader’s responsibilities as they pertain to the components and dimensions of culture, the influence of culture on behavior and the impact of culture on military operations.

Assignment Instructions: Post a substantial initial response, with at least 1 cited source and a minimum of 350 words. Identify references following the post using APA format.  Additionally, respond to at least 2 posts of your classmates, with at least 1 cited source each and a minimum of 150 words per response for full participation credit. See Form 1009C-DL for specific requirements.

Topic of Discussion: Analyze the concepts and theories you read about in L208, L303, L305, L305, and L306; utilizing key language and terms from these concepts and theories, discuss from an operations Sergeants Major’s perspective, serving within a joint multinational headquarters; describe the cultural considerations relevant to conducting military operations and how serving within this environment impacts your leadership ability to influence multinational partners.

In your discussion, you should consider incorporating the elements of culture as part of your response and think about the following:

  • How does culture influence human behavior?
  • How does culturally influenced behavior affect military operations?
  • What is the relationship between personality, culture, and human nature, and how can you use that relationship to influence others?
  • Is it possible to achieve commitment from others in a cross-cultural environment or is compliance the highest level of influence one can achieve?
