Hydration and Cognitive Abilities of Teenagers

Part 2

A psychologist was interested in whether hydration had an impact on the cognitive abilities of teenagers.  She approached the local secondary school and was granted permission to carry out an experiment on a cohort of two sixth year classes.  There were 25 pupils in each class.   She devised a cognitive task for that age group. Class A pupils received no bottled water in class for a week before the test.  Class B was provided with a half-litre bottle of water every day.  After one week, the cognitive task was administered to each class.  The results (out of 100) were as follows:

Class A  –    No waterClass B – with water

Task:

  • Devise a suitable hypothesis for the above research.                               4 Marks
  • Calculate the mean, mode and median for each of the classes and demonstrate the results on a table.  Calculate to two decimal places.                               12 Marks
  • State the strengths and weaknesses of each of the measures of central tendency calculated in question 2.                                                                                10 Marks
  • Identify two extraneous variables that could affect the dependent variable.

  • Calculate the standard deviation for each of the data sets.  Show all working.

  • Explain what the standard deviation tells us about the results in each of the classes.

                                                                                                                              4 Marks

  • Focussing on the mean results, state whether the results support or challenge your hypothesis and state why.                                                                               4 Marks
