One of the essential career skills that you will develop in your degree programs is that of communication. In fact, it is one of the most urgently needed career skills by employers in nearly all professions! That is why we have a graduate career competency that you will work on throughout your degree program.
Confidently and professionally, apply multiple methods of effective communication for diverse audiences.
You have been working on this skill through your discussions, reflections, and your project thus far. Now, let’s apply to a growing communication trend: podcasting.
Podcasts have become a go-to for millions to get credible information quickly and on demand. In your leadership role, you will often need to communicate using modes of communication that are low cost and will reach your stakeholders wherever they may be. Podcasts can accomplish this. Let’s practice podcasting!
You will create a five-to-ten-minute podcast that provides your audience – fellow attendees here in the Society for Ethical Leadership and Development Conference – with information about one to two ethical considerations for the use of AI in your discipline.
You will be using the information you have been gathering for your AI project to support your podcast talking points. I recommend that you narrow the discipline down to an area and target podcast audience in which you are interested. For example:
• If you are interested in business, you might focus on a telecommunications audience or a corporate sales audience – or perhaps even a cannabis start-up audience, to name a few.
• If you are interested in criminal justice, you might look at a policing audience.
• If you are interested in cybersecurity, you might focus on telecommunications, education, energy infrastructure, corporate security, or some other area of interest to you.
• If your area is health care, you might want to target a healthcare administration, nursing home, hospital, or public health audience, depending on your interest.
• If interested in public administration, you might consider rural public organizations, city management, or state or federal civil service, etc.
You have several options for creating your podcast.
•
o Pair Up: You can choose to pair up with someone else and do a joint podcast. One of you can play the podcast host, while the other serves as an expert guest. If you are the host, you will still be expected to share information that highlights your knowledge on the topic. In essence, you’ll be both hosting and contributing insights and knowledge. If you are the guest, you can also feel free to ask your host questions or invite a dialogue in a certain area. These sorts of podcasts are a give-and-take dialogue that enriches the audience. While this approach involves more coordination, it is often more fun and overall less work for each of you. You will each likely receive the same grade if you both show that you have contributed substantially and equivalently to recording your podcast.
o Go Solo: You can serve as a solo podcaster. In this case, you will record your podcast much like a short TED podcast with just one presenter.
Whichever method you choose, you want to speak persuasively and compellingly. Imagine that you really want this audience’s buy-in and have these few minutes to get it. The information should be evidence-backed, closely aligned to the issue at hand, and very focused.
In addition to the ethical focus, you will need to address at least one legal or compliance issue involved in your discipline’s perspective. Use your profession’s best practices, as well, when you provide your recommendation to your audience.
This will involve some research. You should have at least three sources of current, highly credible information and should credit your sources in your podcast by organization or research (not by document). Remember, you are speaking to an audience and want to really talk to them.
You must provide a transcript in a Word or PDF format to ensure all can access what you have created as part of the Americans with Disabilities Act. (Note: this is important to always be aware of in your professions!)
All posts are due by the end of the week. However, the earlier in the week you post, the more points you will get in the discussion rubric. For example, while you can post at any time of the week that works for you, if you post by Wednesday, you will earn full points on the timeliness criterion. For each day later in the week that you post, you will earn fewer points. Per Excelsior policy, no posts are accepted for grading after the module closes. Please view your rubric for specific information on maximizing your points. If you have questions, please ask me!
Part I: Initial Post
Post your podcast along with a transcript for ADA accessibility.
Part II: Interact with Classmates
Review at least three other podcasts, with two being from disciplines other than yours, and share your thoughts with your colleagues. Talk about the similarities and differences across fields around legal and compliance issues. Share the ethical issues you see arising, whether potential or actual. Be sure to moderate your own podcast thread, as well, and engage in conversation with those who have responded to you.
If you have not yet setup your Zoom account, please see these instructions Download these instructions. Note: you will be recording an MP4 file that will save locally to your computer. Please upload that MP4 file to the discussion. Please also include a written transcript in your post. For more information on starting a Zoom meeting and recording, please see these links:
