This assignment is to be completed after reading the first chapter of your textbook (specifically pages 32 – 46, or Section 1.7 in REVEL).
Using the research designs and methods you just learned about, create your own research study using the following questions to guide your methods. Choose 3 out of the 5 research topics below to design.
For each design, please identify what behavior or variable you will be focusing on (e.g. for the divorce question, the amount of time the child spends crying, or how their grades in school change over the school year), which method you will use to measure this behavior and why (e.g. naturalistic observation of crying at home), and the overall design of the study (e.g. a longitudinal correlational design).
Secondly, what ethical considerations are there for your research? Will you need to obtain parental consent, and/or child assent? What types of risks or benefits are present in your study? How will confidentiality be maintained, and how would you anticipate recruiting participants? This part of the assignment is an opportunity for you to reflect on how we ensure no harm comes to the children and families involved in developmental research. Your answers to these questions should demonstrate that you understand these principles and can apply them.
