Final Culminating Project
Science Magazine
Create a digital science magazine with a creative title and cover graphic. Include the following sections in the magazine.
A. Table of Contents
B. Research articles: (1 page for each article)
- Ecosystems: Research and write a report describing the social, economic, and environmental impact for one of the following: How has over fishing affected the ecosystems on the east coast of Canada? How has climate change affected the ecosystems and people in northern Canada? How has suburban development on the Niagara Escarpment or the Oak Ridges Moraine affected local ecosystems? How has the zebra mussel population in Lake Erie affected aquatic species and water quality? How has commercial logging affected the sustainability of forests in Northern Ontario?
- Chemistry: Research and report on one of the following selected chemical hazards. How has the presence of mercury in water bodies in Northern Ontario affected the environment and the lives of Aboriginal people? How does the widespread use of agricultural chemicals in Canada or elsewhere affect the economy, society, and environment? What are the economic benefits and environmental costs of diamond mining for Northern Canadian communities? What is the impact of road salt on driving conditions and on the environment?
- Weather: Research, compare, and report on one of the following: Why does the temperature sometimes get warmer during a rainstorm and cooler as the rain evaporates? Why does the temperature get warmer as snow falls at the beginning of winter? Why does the temperature generally get colder in the month or two following December 21 (the shortest day of the year) even though the days are getting longer?
- Physics: Research and report on one comparison of energy efficiency and consumption of different appliances. What is the difference in transport technology used by pre-industrial and by industrial societies? What are the methods to measure gravitational acceleration? How do you know when a falling object has reached its terminal velocity and what features of the object affect its terminal velocity?
C. Fun Section:
Create four different themed word puzzles (e.g., crosswords, trivia) to demonstrate your understanding of the terminology used in each of the four units. Note: word searches do not demonstrate an understanding of the terminology.
D. Job Advertisement:
Research two different jobs related to the fields of science studied throughout the course and create a job advertisement (include the skills and education required) for each.
Organization:
• Create a magazine cover with a cover graphic representing one of your featured articles and table of contents.
• Your report must contain illustrations (pictures, graphs, diagrams) in order to support the information. Each of the figures that you include MUST SERVE A PURPOSE. For example, do not just include a nice picture of a tractor. The illustrations must support the information in the presentation.
• All material that is not common knowledge will be referenced within the presentation and cited in your bibliography. You may paraphrase material however, it must be referenced! General knowledge statements do not have to be referenced. However, if you are citing something unique or specific, it must be referenced and in quotes. Quotes should be used sparingly.
• All material MUST be in your own words. PLAGIARISM of ANY form will be brought to the attention of the administration and may result in a mark of ZERO along with other appropriate consequences.
