Conflict Management

1.      Goals of this Assignment:

1. To provide students with information about how to become aware of patterns of

behaviors and how to manage these behaviors during a conflict.

• To help students understand how to practice separating conflict behaviors from

interpretations of conflict behaviors.

• To help students practice being provisional about interpretations of others’ behaviors.

• How to complete this assignment?

            This assignment must be submitted in a summary format, answering the questions in

             the same order in which they are presented.

• Identifying Conflict Behaviors: You Must:

a.      Identify a conflict that you have engaged in (or currently engaged in).

b.      Think about how you have behaved (or are behaving) in this conflict as you try to

manage/solve the conflict.

    4.     Discussion Questions (For the above conflict)

     a. How difficult is it to separate your observation of your behaviors from your interpretation

                of the same behaviors?

• Is it easier now (that you have been studying conflict) than it was earlier in the class?
• Why is it important to be tentative and provisional about your interpretations of others’ behaviors?

1. To encourage students to recognize the feelings they may experience during the conflict.
2. To evaluate the impact on the message based on expressing or not expressing the feeling.

 

2. Think about the same conflict you identified. Using that same conflict, answer the following

    questions.

1. How difficult is/was it to come up with words to label the feelings you might experience in this

conflict situation?

• What would be the impact of the message that you would be sending if feelings were not

expressed?

• What are the barriers that prevent clear expressions of feelings during the conflict?
• What suggestions do you have about how to overcome these barriers?
• Are there any situations in which feelings should not be expressed in a conflict? Explain.
