Step 1 – Cardiac
• Go to the webpage Fire Fighter Fatality Investigation and Prevention – Completed | NIOSH | CDC. (2021)
• Under “Select a state and fatality type” dropdown, choose “All” or your particular state.
• Under “Medical,” select “Cardiac – All.”
• Hit “Submit.”
• Select a report from those provided to compare with your own department.
• Save that report.
Step 2 – Training

• Under “Select a state and fatality type” dropdown, choose “All” or your particular state.
• Under “Medical,” clear by selecting the first option, “Select a Medical-Related Category.”
• Under “Trauma,” select “Training – All.”
• Hit “Submit.”
• Select a report from those provided to compare with your own department.
• Save that report.
Step 3 – Gain Perspective
• Search online for additional information relating to the report topic.
• Share report and additional findings with at least one individual within your organization.
• Discuss your perspectives regarding each topic relevant to your organization:
o Is there a low, medium, or high risk of your organization experiencing similar
incidents?
o How are you defining low, medium, or high risk?
o Can you name three things that your organization is doing to decrease risk of at
least one of these incidents?

Essay Assignment #2
Instructions:
Write a risk assessment report for your organization based on comparison with one of the NIOSH reports and the research that you conducted. Content should include the following sections:
• an overview and summary of the issue/report;
• the probability (likelihood) of the incident(s) occurring within your organization and nationally;
• the consequence (magnitude) of the incident(s) on the organization;
• the impact of the incidents on your department’s response system; and
• a summary of your perspective and those within your department and/or the research you conducted on this issue. Were they similar or divergent, and why? Did the collection of other perspectives or additional research impact your own? Why?
The essay must adhere to the criteria below:
• The essay must be at least 750 words, following APA format.
• The essay must include at least one NIOSH reference.
• The essay must include at least one published article or opinion piece references.
• The essay must include at least one direct quote from someone within your organization.
