- Identify an area of nursing that you believe we have a need to improve upon. Examples of this could be clinical practice, patient satisfaction, staff satisfaction, organizational culture, or provider to nurse relationship.
- Once you identify an area of nursing, break it down further and identify a particular exemplar that you would like to address. For example, if you chose clinical practice then you would break it down into some topic related, that you want to either learn more about or fix. An example for clinical practice might be the prevention of pressure ulcers. Then, we want you to look at it from a further perspective since so much work has already been done on pressure ulcers. So, one thing you might look at is the impact of finances as a result of pressure ulcers, or you might look at the effects of scarring on body image issues from pressure ulcers. We want you to look bigger than what you already know regarding a particular topic. We want you to take your topic in a different direction than what you’re finding.
- Once you determine your topic of interest, and keep in mind this is a topic of interest that you will use throughout the entire course, we want you to develop your PICO question. What exactly are you going to try to find out about your topic, and what impact does your topic have on the area of interest you have chosen? In our week two and three module there is information posted on developing your question. Keep in mind, that your question may change several times before you figure out exactly what you would like to address. The more you read the more you will find that your ideas and perspectives regarding your topic will change. The development and presentation of your question is worth 10 points.
- Conduct a literature review of at least eight references; four of which must be from true peer reviewed journal articles, two must be from textbooks and/or other learning resources, and two must be from practice guidelines. For example, if you are focusing on an issue that occurs in the emergency room, then you would access the Emergency Nursing Association practice guidelines. If you are focusing on patient satisfaction, then you could look at patient and family advisory board guidelines at the national level. If you are looking at things such as pressure ulcers, fall risk, physician and nurse satisfaction, you could access the national database for nursing quality indicators or NDNQI. Each reference and a brief paragraph describing each reference is worth 10 points each (80 points).
- Finally, you will create a word document with a title page, your PICOT question on the second page, and then each reference, with a coinciding descriptive paragraph underneath, is to follow. Finally, you will have references as your last page or two. All of this shall be done in APA format. This section is worth 10 points to total the Exam 1 to 100 points.
