The final project will give you an opportunity to reflect on and apply the material that has been covered in this course.
Choose one of two options (Addressing Model OR Interview):
Option 1: Addressing
• The goal for this assignment is to have you review Hays’ model (chapter 2) for understanding cultural or social identity, as well as explore your own identities both as an individual and as a potential professional in a psychology field. By using the ADDRESSING acronym as a guide, you can become more familiar with the multiple group memberships and cultural identities of yourself and others. As we know from Hays’ model, identity is multi-factorial. How one sees oneself and one’s power and privilege are related to numerous cultural identities.
- In reviewing the ADDRESSING model:
- Select 5 of the 9 identities below to discuss in detail.
- Describe how they relate to you AND your work with clients or students in your future career. For each of the 5 identities, you select, use the questions below to help you explore your identities in detail.
- Age and generational influences: When you were born, what were the social expectations for a person of your identity? Do you identify with a particular generation (e.g. baby boomers, Gen X or Y, second-generation immigrants, etc.)? How have your values and worldview been shaped by the social movements or influences on your generation (e.g. the Great Depression, World War II, the Vietnam War, women’s movement, Stonewall, Americans with Disabilities Act, civil rights movement, social media, an economic downturn, political events in another country)?
- Developmental or other disability: Do you identify as someone living with a visible disability, or a nonvisible disability (e.g. chronic pain, psychiatric or learning disability)? If no, has your personal or professional life been affected by others with disabilities (e.g. friend, family member, partner, or coworker with a disability)? How has disability status – either your disability or that of someone else in your life – affected your life and
- Religion & spirituality: Were you brought up in a religious or spiritual tradition? Do you identify with a religion or have a spiritual practice now? How were your values and goals shaped by your religious or non-religious upbringing?
- Ethnic & racial identity: What do you consider your ethnic or racial identity? If you were adopted, what are the identities of your biological and adoptive parents? How do other people identify you? Are these the same? Are there ethnic or racial differences within your family?
- Socioeconomic status: what social class did you grow up in, and what do you consider your socioeconomic status now? When you were in high school, what were the educational and work opportunities available to
- Sexual orientation: Do you identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or heterosexual? If you are heterosexual, do you have a family member or friend who is gay? Is your family accepting of a gay member?
- Indigenous heritage: Do you belong to a Native tribe or nation, for example, Native Hawaiian, First Nations, Alaska Native, or American Indian? Did you grow up on or near a reservation or Native community?
Do you seek to connect or reconnect with your Native community?
- National origin: Are you a U.S. citizen, an international student, or an immigrant? Were you born in the U.S.? Do you (and your parents and grandparents) speak English as a first language? How has your nationality
affected your life and opportunities?
- Gender: What were and are the gender-related roles and expectations for you in your family of origin and current family, in your work setting, and relation to your other cultural identities? How have these expectations affected your choices in life?
• After reflecting on these identities further, please discuss how these factors could impact your work as a provider with others who have different identities. Your paper should be at least 5 full pages in APA format. Please include appropriate references and scholarly sources to back up your opinions.
• You must use at least 3 additional scholarly sources used in this course, such as
scholarly or peer-reviewed journals.
Option 2: Interview
• You will interview an individual belonging to a marginalized group in the United States. Marginalized groups can include any group that has been discriminated against or faced oppression due to being viewed as the “other” in society. Marginalization can occur because of someone’s race, gender, class, sexual orientation, age, religion, or ability. Examples include African Americans, Latinos, women, gay or lesbians, seniors, or people with disabilities.
• For your interview, please create a list of a minimum of ten relevant questions to ask your interviewee. These questions should not be merely “yes” or “no” questions. Rather, these questions should be open-ended (aka “free-response”) and written in such a way as to encourage the interviewee to expand on their experience in detail. Include the questions with your write-up. Do not include the real name of the person interviewed in order to maintain confidentiality.
• You will write a 5-page reflection paper (not including the question list) that describes your experiences speaking with the individual, and the responses they provided. You should be describing your experiences with specific detail which includes:
- a description of the individual’s story,
- what you learned,
- why it was important,
- how it relates to key concepts you learned about in the course, and
- how it contributes to better understanding your chosen group.
Please use specific examples to illustrate your points.
Make sure to tie what you learned in the interview to key concepts you learned in the course. To further support your connections to key concepts in multicultural psychology, use at least 3 additional scholarly sources, such as scholarly or peer reviewed journals.
• Submit a Word document in APA format.
• Five pages in length, excluding the Title, Reference, and Questionnaire pages.
• Use at least three additional scholarly resources.
