Use the following textbook: Applied Ethics: A Multicultural Approach, Sixth Edition, Edited by Larry May and Jill B. Delston. Part VIII (pages 421 to 501).
The essay should be no more than 2,500 words and use 3 references
The essay should include four sections: Introduction, Affirmation, Refutation and Resolution
The introduction/narration should specifically address the following questions:
When, if ever, is a medical professional morally justified in providing to a patient a medication or medical procedure that is intended to immediately end the patient’s life? When, if ever, would it be immoral for a medical professional to do this? Does the patient’s age, mental state, medical condition, financial status, or capacity to actively participate in the euthanasia affect the moral status of the procedure? Are there any factors not involving the patient that would be morally relevant to this action?
Your affirmation must defend ALL FOUR of your answers with arguments, and make sure your arguments are CONSISTENT for each answer. If your argument in defense of one answer contradicts your argument in defense of another, then you have weakened your position and will be penalized for irrational self-contradiction.
Your Refutation/Counterargument only needs to object to ONE of your answers, not all four of them.
Your Resolution should “break the tie,” either countering the counterargument or adding more arguments to the affirmation.
Finally, at least one of your arguments must specifically address at least one of the following five authors from the text (James Rachels, Bonnie Steinbock, Margaret Pabst Battin, Lo Ping-Cheung, Carl Becker) who DISAGREES with some part of your thesis. That is, you must defend your thesis from that author in particular, demonstrating that you understand why that author would disagree with you, and producing some kind of intelligent, well-argued response to their disagreement.
