Unsustainable use of productive land and Sustainable Agriculture

In chapter 13 we are introduced to the overuse and management of land. Land which is a resource providing crops for food and area to raise livestock. As the global human population grows we will require more food which in turn will require more land. Chapter 13 discusses types of land management and/or use, three of them specifically being clear cutting, slash and burn and livestock grazing.

First, discuss each of these in turn, make sure you discuss why each is used or done, the purpose, and then the outcome from doing so. When discussing the outcome provide the disadvantages of these practices as well as possible advantages other than the initial intended purpose (yes there are some!).

In chapter 14 we learn about industrialized farming practices which are high input of labor and fossil fuels for maximum yield that come with environmental impacts. Discuss at least 4 of the environmental impacts of industrialized farming. The bottom line is that industrialized farming is most likely not sustainable into the future so focusing on sustainable agriculture seems like the way to go.

Next, discuss the concept of sustainable agriculture. What methods/practices are involved in this type of agriculture?

Last, research a place in the United States that uses these practices and discuss their specific practices and yields.
