Reconciliation and 94 Calls to Action

Task:

This will be your first assignment to incorporate your MLA format citation skills. There will be three sections to this assignment. They should EACH be one to two paragraphs.

1) The first thing you will need to do is write down your thoughts about the current progress on the recommendations and findings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. Read through and assess the information and links below, including the 94 Calls to Action report and then discuss your thoughts about how well you think Canada is doing. Your job is to provide a grade (from A to F) and explain why. Have evidence from the sources you read to back your points.  Cite your sources within the text for all sections of this assignment. You also need a Works Cited page.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) was formed as a way to deal with the devastating legacy of forced assimilation and abuse left by such things as the residential school system.

The first residential schools opened in Canada in the 1870s. They were the product of churches and the government; a collective, calculated effort to eradicate Indigenous language and culture that the commission called a policy of cultural genocide.

From 2008 to 2014, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission heard stories from thousands of residential school survivors. In June 2015, the commission released a report based on those hearings. From that came the 94 Calls to Action: individual instructions to guide governments, communities, and faith groups down the road to reconciliation. You can view documents and exhibits from the TRC here. Watch these videos to learn more.  https://nctr.ca/about/history-of-the-trc/trc-website/

2) Next, look over the 94 Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation final report. It is made up of six sections: Welfare, Education, Language & Culture, Health, Justice, Reconciliation. You are not expected to read it all–skim over it. Select one of the 94 recommendations. Search the internet to find evidence if anything has been accomplished in response to this call to action at either a local, provincial or country-wide level.

Be aware—it’s possible that no action at any level has occurred in relation to your selection. Click here to visit CBC’s Beyond 94 interactive site where you can check on the progress that has occurred on the 94 calls to action. You want to choose a call to action that change has been made on. You should do your own research after this, Googling news articles on the topic is helpful. You can also get more resources by clicking here. For this assignment, look at each level of government and research what has or has not been done. See the example below for notes taken on Call to Action 14. Take notes and then write out your response in paragraph format.

3) Select a second call to action that no action has been taken on yet. Brainstorm how this call to action can be actualized and write your ideas down. How can all levels of government be involved? What other players would need to be involved? How could an everyday person be involved in making it happen? Why did you choose this call to action? How do you think having it happen will help with the Reconciliation process.

Cite your sources for all your information used in this assignment within the text. A Works Cited page is also needed.
