INTRODUCTION
Teachers must demonstrate knowledge of the policies, practices, and legal requirements of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Title III in order to collaborate with various stakeholders and recommend strategies to advocate for student success in ways that are effective, legal, and ethical. In this task, you will answer potential interview questions to demonstrate your knowledge and ability to legally and effectively advocate for students and their families.

A. During a job interview for a teaching position, the principal of the school presents you with scenarios. Respond as if you were the classroom teacher in each of the following scenarios:

  1. Scenario 1: A parent of an English learner (EL) student in your classroom complains to your administrator that you do not understand how to communicate with parents who do not speak English as a first language.

Describe one possible strategy, legal and ethical according to Title III, you could use to better communicate with these parents and how this strategy addresses the issue from the parent’s

perspective.

  1. Scenario 2: You have been assigned as a co-teacher in a classroom to assist with EL students and students with exceptionalities. You are struggling to build a working relationship with the teacher because the teacher has never worked with a co-teacher before.

Describe one collaborative strategy you could use to build a positive working relationship with the teacher.

  1. Scenario 3: Your Professional Learning Community (PLC) asks you to present the key legal concepts of using one of the following plans:

• an Individualized Education Program (IEP) (reference IDEA)
• 504 plan (reference Civil Rights)
• Limited English Proficiency (LEP) plan (reference Title III) in the classroom

Explain three of the key legal concepts of one of these plans that are associated with teacher responsibilities and accountability.

B. Acknowledge sources, using in-text citations and references, for content that is quoted, paraphrased, or summarized.

C. Demonstrate professional communication in the content and presentation of your submission.
