Instructions: In 3-4 pages (double-spaced, 12 point, Times New Roman) write an analysis of any of the Primary Source Documents specified in the assignment. The central focus of your analysis, and the argument in your thesis statement, will explain what we, as historians, can
learn from this document about the historical time and place in which it was written. The body of your essay will provide the evidence and explanation to back-up your argument. This evidence and explanation should include:
- Identifying what type of document it is
- Identifying the author or authors and their reason for writing the document (was the author writing to promote or oppose something?)
- Explaining the historical context that is necessary for understanding this document
- Identify what, if any claims or arguments are made in the document and explain how the author supports them.
- Describe any unspoken assumptions held by the author (This is a tricky one: Think about what underlying beliefs about the world shape their writing? These underlying beliefs may be part of a worldview shared by others in their cultural setting, gender or class group, etc.)
- Finally, describe what this document reveals to us about the time and place in which it was written. What was going on at that time and what did people think about it (including the documents author as well as its intended audience)?
(note that the answers to some of the above questions will not be obvious or explicitly stated. Use creative guesswork and see what you can surmise. When possible explain your reasoning briefly. Explain why you think such and such about the author’s motives)
A strong paper will not simply answer each of the above questions separately, but read as one coherent argument about what we, as historians, learn from this document about the time and place in which it was written
In your analysis, be sure to quote and analyze key statements from the document and use the textbook to provide context that will help your analysis of the document. (It is best to paraphrase information from the text in your own words and save direct quotes for key phrases from the document that you plan to analyze).
