This assignment won’t be able to be completed until Aaron Munoz and Carl Granger speak. This is a 4 slide powerpoint. Consider this as if the speakers on October 3 were part of a professional development conference you attended, and now you are reporting back what you’ve learned.
You can use whichever design layout you prefer, but I’d like you to put some effort deciding. The slides should be organized as followed:
1) Title slide – be creative with your title, but make sure it describes/encompasses both lectures. Keep the title brief, it shouldn’t be more than 5 words
2) Summarize Aaron’s lecture. Identify the top 3 things you learned, and/or you will use in your career. Identify which type of leader you think Aaron is based on the Full Range Leadership article – not just laissez faire, transactional or transformational, but also the subtypes. The title of slide should be “Aaron Munoz –
3) Summarize Carl Granger’s lecture. Identify the top 3 things you learned and/or will use in your career. identify which type of leader you think Aaron is based on the Full Range Leadership article – not just laissez faire, transactional or transformational, but also the subtypes. The title of the slide should be “Carl Granger –
4) Identify your style. What is your Leadership Style from the Quiz? Would you agree or disagree and why?
The quiz identified me as an affiliative leader. I expected and agreed with the conclusion as this type of leadership aligns with my personality. Affiliative leadership is about building relationships, establishing harmony, and maintaining a concern for the welfare of the team members. Since emotional intelligence and maintaining a good atmosphere at work are crucial to me, I like how this leadership style fits my natural behavior and interactions with people. The style is effective in the EHS area and generally applies where collaboration, confidence, and trust among members are required.
The leadership style resonates with the content from chapters 5 and 9, especially regarding EHS. Safety leadership needs a culture of openness and trust in which employees can freely speak about any potential hazard, incident reporting, or suggestions for safety improvement. From the chapters read, a career in EHS requires asking for help where needed and building relationships with people around me to make it easier to reduce risks and improve safety. Leaders alone cannot do it in EHS; collaboration across teams is very important. Affiliative leadership helps foster teamwork among team members to solve outstanding problems, strengthening the general safety culture. In addition, this leadership style helps create a positive environment, which is important in sustaining morale and succeeding in an EHS career.
While affiliative leadership is valuable in EHS, there are times when one must develop more authoritative approaches. In safety management, situations arise that require firm and quick decisions, especially in emergencies and strict adherence to safety policies. I will have to work on developing the ability to be much firmer without compromising the positive team dynamics, which I will have to work on in the next few years.
One thing that I found interesting this week is the importance of shadowing an EHS mentor. Mentorship is a very special opportunity for growth. I will get practical insight from the industry to refine my leadership style. Watching a seasoned leader will help balance the affiliative approach with the authority needed in some situations, which would be a vital tool for professional development.
5) Comparison and contrast of Aaron’s and Carl’s presentation style – what was the similar? what was different? can you relate better to one or the other? Is there anything you would like to adopt from their presentation style?
The slides themselves should be concise. Images, graphs, etc are encouraged but not required.
Enter a script into notes as to how you’d present to your management team and peers after attending the conference.
