Home Safety Check

Course Level Outcome (CLO): Students will be able to identify health, safety, and nutritional risks for children.

Purpose:  This assignment is to help students identify safety risks and to evaluate an early childhood facility for quality and safety issues.

Tasks:

• Read Chapter 7: “Creating High-Quality Environments” in your textbook.
• Look at your home environment for safety hazards outdoors and indoors.
• Use the safety checklist provided from the Department of Social Services Website found at the end of this page as a guide. (No need to submit this.)

Skills Learned:

• How to conduct a home safety inspection.
• You will learn how to evaluate your home environment as a possible in-home child care facility implementing the Health and Safety Facility checklist from the Department of Social Services.
• How to interpret a safety checklist and evaluate the findings in your home to determine if you can provide a safe environment for children.

• How to write a research paper using the APA format.
• How to create In-text Citations using APA format
• How to create a Reference page using APA format

How to regulate your role as an educator in providing a safe environment for children.

CONTENT

1. TITLE PAGE:

• Must include your name, date, school, and title of paper.

2. ABSTRACT (Introduction):

• Purpose: The purpose, objective, or question to be considered is stated clearly.
• Interest: You as the author convinces the reader that the paper is worth reading in an interesting fashion.
• Preview: You the author presents a preview of how the topic will be discussed and how your objective will be met.

3. BODY

• Give a brief overview of your home. Describe each room. 
• Overview of home: For example: “In my home I have a living room, 2 bedrooms, 1 bath, Kitchen and includes dining room in it.  There is no hallway or stairs. I have backyard and front yard with secure gate all around.”
• Inspect your home environment, room by room, describe and discuss the risks found in each room/category that should be removed or if your home were being set up for children. Discuss the findings in your own home: List each of the 8 categories found below.
• Identify the Risks/solutions for each area of your home. Do not omit anything.
• Discuss your findings. State each issue/risk; room by room and then state the solutions.

•    If any item does not apply to your home, then write “not applicable” so I know that you reviewed it. Do not omit any of the contents.  Do not leave any of the content items blank. 

IN-TEXT CITATIONS:

• You must give credit to the people who have written the work that you quote or reference in the body of the paper.  To do so, use reference citations in the text of the paper.  Failing to do this is plagiarism.  (See your syllabus for the college policy on Academic Honesty).
• When you refer to someone else’s work, don’t simply quote them, you must cite the source inside of the text of your quote. (Follow APA guidelines). (See Page assignment instructions in Canvas for active links)
• Only cite materials that were discussed/referenced in your paper.   All materials that were cited in your paper must appear in the reference section.

4. CONCLUSION/REACTION:  State how the assignment helped you in your role in identifying safety and environmental risks for children.  What are your next steps?  What did you learn from this assignment?

• Describe in detail how this assignment was valuable to you.
• Discuss how this assignment helped you in your role as an educator/and or parent.
• Summarize, in a final paragraph, what are your next steps and what you learned from this experience.

5. REFERENCE PAGE

• Your research must include at least 3 credible sources that you referred to in your essay, such as .edu or .org. and your textbook. This goes on a page by itself.   You must Follow APA guidelines.(See Page assignment instructions in Canvas for active links)
• Only cite materials that were discussed/referenced in your paper.

All materials that were cited in your paper must appear in the reference section.

• You will type a 1000 -1250-word count paper, double- spaced, using Times New Roman research paper following APA format.

• Do not use the question-and-answer format.
• Do not put numbers or the questions in your essay.
• Please use complete sentences.
• In the body of your paper, you must provide 3 In-text citations from your textbook or a credible source.  You must Cite every borrowed sentence or idea.
