Technical Report Writing – Research Paper Template
A well-presented technical report should convey the purpose of the examination, hypothesis, or concise theoretical background of the topic under investigation, observations and discussion of results, and deductive or inductive reasoning based on findings and lessons learned from the experiments.
The report should be written in such a way other people who are unfamiliar with the subject matter can read and understand. Desirably, the narration should be free of any commitment to any person(s), that is, refrain from the use of pronouns such as I, We, Our, Us, to mention a few. The report should be written in your own words, and when quotes from others are used, proper quotation should be used. (Refer to APA format).
To convey the understanding, the organization of the report should lead to a deft arrangement of information including data, graphs, and pertinent answers to questions posed by the research. The report should be typewritten, double-spaced, text on one side of the page using letter size paper (8.5 inches x 11inches) and 12-point font size. The main topics and subtopics should be highlighted or in bold print to distinguish different segments of the document.
The written technical report should include the following subtopics sequence:
Title Page:
State the main title of the report, name(s) and affiliation(s) of the writer(s), and date of the report.
Abstract:
The abstract is a microcosm of the research. It should in brief contain the study highlight; it should contain the objectives, methodology, main findings, and conclusions of the study.
Introduction:
In the introduction, paraphrase the problem statement, solution, or experimental approach. Summarize and evaluate the literature that you have used in your study. Also include basic principles and offer relevant theoretical derived equations or formulas that will be used to check empirical results. The engineering units of measurements and dimensions must be always stated with reported data. Always use consistent units (SI or English system only)
Literature Review
Summarize and evaluate the literature that you have used in your study by considering:
- How that literature has contributed to your area of research
- The strengths and weaknesses of previous studies. How that literature informs your own research and understanding of the research problem
(Note: Include at least 5 literature review)
Results:
Visually and textually represents research findings
Visual representation of results:
Graphs, tables, diagrams, charts
Explanatory text:
Text points out the most significant portions of research findings
Indicates key trends or relationships
Highlights expected and/or unexpected findings
Discussion of the Results:
Assesses and comments on research results
Include:
Explanation for Results
Comments on unexpected results, offering hypothesis for them
Comparison to literature
Does your research confirm previous studies? Deviate from them?
Explanation for how info can be applied in broader context
Conclusion:
Discuss:
What was learned through research?
What remains to be learned?
Weaknesses and shortcomings of study
Strengths of study
Possible applications of study (how it can be used)
Recommendations

Use the APA format to cite used resources in the report.
