Diagnose a character from a movie, TV show, video game, book, etc. You may use a character that you already know or you could use a character from a movie/TV show from the list provided in this website: https://www.nami.org/Blogs/NAMI-Blog/December-2017/The-Best-Movies-About-Mental-Health Links to an external site.
When you find a character, create a presentation using Powerpoint or Google Slides. You will open your presentation on the classroom computer and present to the class. There will be a 15 minute limit to your presentations (you can not exceed 15 minutes). Even though there is a cap on the amount of time you have to present, please make sure you write down all the information required of this project. If it is not written down, it will not be included in the grade.
Create a Case Conceptualization by answering ALL of the following questions. Use the same exact outline with bullet points in your slides. Copy and paste the questions into your slides then answer them.
- Identifying Information:
Name:
Gender:
Age:
Race/Ethnicity:
Partner/Marital Status:
Occupation:
Sexual Orientation:
Religion/Spirituality:
Highest Level of Education: - Presenting Problem:
- What appears to be their main dilemma or issue? What is something they would go to a therapist or psychiatrist about?
- What is the history of the presenting problem? (i.e., How long have they been going through this problem or dealing with this problem?)
- Present Living Situation:
- Where are they living? (Location)
- What type of residence is it? (House, apartment, shelter, etc.)
- Who are they living with?
- Whom do they have the most contact with? (e.g., Do they have a best friend they speak to daily or are they super close with a sibling/parent? etc.)
- Developmental History:
Timeline of life events and past experiences going all the way back to childhood (Create an actual timeline) — Think of life milestones like graduating, getting married, etc. but also pay special attention to events in childhood like, for example, bullying, abuse, any sort of trauma, accidents, death of loved ones, etc.
- For the following, give each it’s own slide- they are separate from the timeline:
- Medical history (e.g., Do they have a medical condition? Have they been physically hurt in the past? Been in the hospital for something? Are they taking any medications?)
- Psychological history (e.g., Have they been diagnosed with a disorder in the past? Have they seen therapists or psychiatrists in the past? Have they been hospitalized? Are they taking any psychoactive medication?)
- Substance use history (e.g., Have they ever used drugs or substances in the past? Are they currently using substances?)
- Family medical and psychological history (e.g., Do they have any family members with a medical condition or psychological diagnosis?)
- Resources (money, shelter, food, family, friends, education, etc.)
- Lack of resources (money, shelter, food, family, friends, education, etc.)
- Discuss the characterʼs personality:
- Internally = What are they like when they are alone?
- Externally = What are they like when they are around other people?
- Identify triggers:
- Did something happen in their past and then they were never the same? Perhaps a trauma or accident (emotional or physical)?
- Is there a family history of mental health disorders? In other words, is there a biological trigger?
- Potential diagnosis:
- State the diagnosis you believe the character has
- Include the full diagnostic criteria from the DSM 5 (Full list of symptoms)
- GIVE EXAMPLES of each symptom. For example, if symptoms include “hallucinations,” explain an instance of when they saw a hallucination.
- Create a table listing all the symptoms in one column and then the examples in the next column:
SYMPTOMS | EXAMPLES |
Hallucinations | The character sees and talks to their best friend even though they have been dead for years. |
- Treatment Plan:
- Come up with THREE (3) goals for the person to help them improve mentally, physically, emotionally, socially, academically, or occupationally. For each goal, include a strategy that will help them accomplish that goal. For example, if the person is unemployed, a goal could be to gain employment and the strategy would be to fill out applications, complete a resume, go to interviews, etc.
- Goal 1:
- Strategy to accomplish Goal 1:
- Goal 2:
- Strategy to accomplish Goal 2:
- Goal 3:
- Strategy to accomplish Goal 3:
- Goal 1:
- Provide at least two (2) treatment options that could be used to help them with their goals. For example, if the person has depression, what medications could be prescribed? What types of psychotherapy (CBT, BT, Exposure, etc.) would be useful and why? Explain how the therapy and medication will help. Include BOTH a psychotherapy option and medication option. Show that you know how the therapy works and explain WHY you chose that type of therapy over any other. Think about tailoring the treatment to the person. Show that you know how the medication works (What specific neurotransmitters does it involve? What does it do with those neurotransmitters? Why those specific neurotransmitters?).
- Mental Status Exam (MSE):
- Fill out this MSE – Include it in your report
- You don’t have to put this in your slides – You can save the file after you fill it out and submit it with the presentation (Submit the two files together in Canvas).
