Determining capital structure policy

To receive credit you must complete the competency assessment. PLEASE read the assessment rubric carefully to ensure that you have completed all competency criteria. If you wish to receive an A, you must carefully review the rubric and complete the required number of mastery criteria. PLEASE NOTE: If you receive a passing (B) grade on a competency assessment, you will not be allowed to resubmit your assessment to improve your grade.

This competency assessment (CA) assesses your level of performance on the specific Outcome(s) that are the focus of this module. The CA requires you to demonstrate your knowledge, understanding, and proficiency of the Outcome(s). Be sure to use the other activities in this module prior to attempting the CA. You can attempt the CA multiple times within the term. However, the CA must be completed successfully by the end of the term to earn credit. Refer to your Syllabus for additional information regarding the number of attempts permitted.

Be sure to review the Competency Assessment Rubric to understand the criteria on which you will be evaluated.

Instructors will provide feedback on the CA after each submission. If you expect to receive feedback, revise, and resubmit this CA near the end of the term, be sure to follow the guidelines and deadlines for submission in your Syllabus.

Please refer to your syllabus for additional competency assessment requirements.

You may contact your instructor if you have any questions.

This competency assessment assesses the following Outcome(s):

MT480M3-3: Calculate the cost of debt and equity to determine capital structure policy.

You will complete the assessment in the WileyPlus Lab, which you can access through the link provided in this module.

The assessment provides an advanced review of debt financing, the market for corporate bonds, and the theoretical shape of the yield curve. Debt is the more probable means of financing for most businesses, therefore an in-depth knowledge of debt features is most important.

The assessment will further your understanding of the conceptual relationship between market factors and bond parameters. A majority of the assessment questions will require the use of a financial calculator and/or Excel. The questions will assess your knowledge of the calculations of bond prices, coupon rates, yield to maturity, and effective annual yield. The questions will also assess your conceptual understanding of, and ability to calculate, the price of a share of preferred stock.

Before beginning this assessment, it is highly recommended that you complete the readings, learning activities, and adaptive practice.

The assessment contains 10 problems. A good rule of thumb is to complete the 10 problems then review the Competency Assessment Rubric to find out what you may have missed. If any missed problems fall within a competency criteria they must be corrected to move past this module. If missed problems fall within a mastery criteria, correct necessary ones for your desired assessment score. Once you have achieved your desired assessment score, please upload a file with a note to your professor requesting that they grade your assessment in the Dropbox.

Please note the following when completing the competency assessment:

  • You are allowed unlimited attempts to successfully complete the questions in the WileyPlus Lab.
  • Each attempt must be completed in one sitting. You do not have the option to save and come back to finish.
  • As you complete each question, the lab will provide you with automated feedback; however, this part of the assessment will be manually scored by your instructor.
  • If you need assistance with the lab, please contact your instructor.

Select the MT480M3 Lab Assessment link to begin. Follow the instructions in the Navigating WileyPlus tab for information on how to move along the questions.

Minimum Submission Requirements

  • Attempts must be made on all problems in the WileyPlus Lab.
  • Please submit a file to the Dropbox letting your instructor know you have completed all parts of the competency assessment. You may retake any failed part(s). You will need to submit a file to the Dropbox to your instructor after each re-attempt of any part of the competency assessment.
