Assessment Checklists

In this assignment, you will follow directions to create three (3) assessment checklists that you can use to guide your assessment of children’s cognition, math, and science skills. The blank checklists are located at the end of this document.

Instructions: You can use this type of checklist to document children’s cognition, mathematics, or science skills during classroom activities.
• Determine three skills for the sub-domain. Be sure the skills you include on your checklists are observable.
• Determine and describe three learning activities to elicit these skills (one activity for each skill).
• For example, in the Mathematics Development domain, you may choose the Geometry and Spatial Sense sub-domain. You might identify “Sorts objects into large and small categories”. You could then observe and assess this skill by providing a size sorting activity for young children and then asking them to show you all the big objects, and then show you all the small objects. You may also indicate that you will add materials to a regularly occurring activity (e.g. adding big and small shovels and pails to the sand box outside) that explicitly elicits the skill.
• Optional: You can apply the activities in your classroom. Assess each student’s skill making notes in each column under each student’s name. However, you are not required to complete this activity with a group of students in a classroom.
