Silko’s The Man to Send Rain Clouds

Read Leslie Marmon Silko’s short story “The Man to Send Rain Clouds,” which begins on page 254 of your text. (There is also an external link in Week 14 content.) In an essay of at least four paragraphs (one introduction with a thesis, two or more body paragraphs, and a conclusion), explore what Silko has to say about two cultures meeting.  Consider these questions to jumpstart your thinking:

  • Are there moments of misunderstanding in the story?
  • Are there moments of refused communication?
  • Are there moments of compromise?
  • How important are death rituals to the cultures represented?
  • Does any level of culture combining or assimilation happen in the story?
  • Does the sprinkling of holy water at a traditional Native American burial represent something negative or positive?

Use an MLA heading with your name, course info, and date.  Please include an original title.  Cite quotes by page number in standard MLA style and include a Works Cited. To write an A+ essay, students will do the following:

  • Make a meaningful claim in a well-articulated thesis statement.
  • Quote from and analyze important passages to develop their arguments.
  • Organize the support logically and include transitions between body paragraphs.
  • Have a clear sense of intro, body, and conclusion.

Eliminate grammar errors, include clear signal phrases, and cite borrowed materials correctly
