Journal Entry Assignment One

WRITING PROMPT: Before completing this journal entry, please be sure to review information on the CASEL website (casel.org) and the summary from the book Primal Leadership. Then, please respond to the question below:

Since its initial publication, the phrase “emotional intelligence,” or the shorthand, “EQ,” has become widespread, showing up in settings as unlikely as the cartoon strip “Dilbert,” on boxes of toys that claim to boost a child’s EQ, and in personal ads seeking prospective mates. Where was the first place you heard of emotional intelligence, or EQ? What are some examples of appropriate and inappropriate uses of the term you’ve heard?

JOURNAL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: For all of our journals this semester, you’ll be graded based on the depth and quality of your responses and your engagement with the assigned text(s) for each entry. Your ideas should be based on evidence from the text(s), and personal experiences should be used only to illustrate a point, rather than as a basis for your writing. Personal experiences are valuable, but meaningful learning requires incorporation of new information. That new information should be the focus of your writing in your entries.  Please see the attached rubric for details on how you will be scored.

As a courtesy to your instructor (and for your own records, as you’re welcome and encouraged to use any resources from your journal entries in your writing assignments throughout the course) please include links or attached PDFs to any outside materials you reference in your posts. Primarily, though, your posts should be based on the readings that have been assigned for this class.
