As you know from the last chapter, social psychologists examine people’s affect, behavior, and cognition. These three components do not necessarily match. For example, one’s affect might be different from her behavior.
Further, it is very common for a person to claim that she believes the equality of men and women, yet when she sees a male kindergarten teacher she automatically cringes. That is because our conscious thinking or belief can be independent from our automatic reaction. Important: this is NOT necessarily “hypocrite,” it is only demonstrating how powerful the culture around us can influence us. We either internalize the values from our culture, or simply influenced by the stereotypes the culture gives us—even when we do NOT support those stereotypes.
